BIOGRAPHY:
Gerrard is a third generation Gerrard Hutt.  The descendancy of the name comes from the marriage of Daniel Hutt to Temperance Gerrard.  Gerrard carried this on for another generation, naming his third child Gerrard, IV.   While there is honor in carrying the Gerrard name forward, it does present considerable confusion in distinguishing each generation in primary records.

Some confusion exists as to Gerrard's exact death.  His will was dated in December 7, 1773, but "Gerrard Hutt" is named in the 1799 will of William Hutt.  It is unlikely that Gerrard was living in 1799, as a Census for Virginia taken in 1787 shows his wife, Caty Hutt, owning 16 slaves.  In 1787 it would be extremely unlikely that his wife would retain ownership of the slaves if Gerrard were living.

Gerrard is recorded as being married in Westmoreland County, Virginia to Catherine (Caty) Spence.  Primary sources place Gerrard in Virginia, but the letters of Fannie Swayne, granddaughter of Gerrard's son John, to Chillicothe journalist William McClintock in the 1890s cast doubt as to the origin of his birth. According to her recollections, Gerrard and Caty came to America around 1760.  Her thoughts were primarily based upon her grandfather, John Hutt's bible.

From that bible, it is said that Gerrard Hutt's children were born "in the County of Westmoreland and State of Virginia not far from The Mouth of the Potomac say
not more than fifty miles from Point Lookout and about forty [miles] to Smith's point which from The Mouth of the Potomac."

Also from the bible, Caty's death was recorded: "Caty Hutt my Mother ... deceased this life the 29th day of May 1812 at about 45 minutes after 3 O'Clock in the afternoon and was interred in the buring ground granted by Mr. Gregg on the day following with a numerous and respectable crowd of the ladies and gentlemen of Chillicothe. The Reverend William Solomon Langton preached her funeral in my home where many attended and was well pleased with the discourse. Aged 72 years lacking 11 days. John Hutt, Jr.37
